It's usually said at the end of a visit. The real thing is handled, the work is done, and then - hand already on the door - "oh, hey, while you're here..."

I don't dread it because I'm lazy. I dread it because nothing in IT is actually isolated.

Why the small thing is never just the small thing

The printer that "just needs to be set up" hasn't been configured since the last IT person left two years ago. The network it needs to talk to has changed. The driver isn't signed for the current OS. What looked like ten minutes is now an hour, and someone else is waiting on me across town.

The password that "just needs to be reset" is tied to an account with admin access to three things it shouldn't have. While I'm in there, I notice two accounts that haven't been touched in eighteen months. Now we're having a different conversation than either of us planned for.

The slow computer that "just started doing this" - okay, when did it start? What changed around that time? Is it hardware wearing out? A background process? Something worse? There's no such thing as a five-minute slow computer.

None of these are hard problems. All of them take longer than a doorway suggests.

What to do instead

Book it. Send a text, put it in the queue, let it get scheduled properly. It'll get done right, without rushing something nearby, and it won't eat into a visit that was planned for something else.

The small stuff matters. It just deserves more than a hallway.
